The International Exhibition of Chinese Art held at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1935/6 is a story of superlatives, unique and unrepeatable. It was and will remain the largest and most important exhibition of ancient Chinese art ever mounted. It was realized thanks to a small group of visionaries – all OCS Council Members – who believed in the power of art to foster international understanding and were possessed of an almost missionary drive to present one of the world’s greatest cultures to a world basically ignorant of it. The lecture will discuss the event as a whole, with a particular focus on the ceramic loans.

The Society of Antiquaries welcomes wheelchairs and mobility vehicles however since the main entrance consists of steps they will provide a ramp. Essential companions are also welcome and Hearing Loops are built into the Lecture Room AV system. There are no designated disabled toilets but toilets are located on the ground floor.

Regina Krahl 康蕊君Independent ScholarRegina Krahl is an independent researcher of Chinese art, specializing in Chinese ceramics. A former President of the Oriental Ceramic Society, she served twice as curator for the Royal Academy of Arts, worked at the British Museum as Acting Curator of Chinese Ceramics, and as Academic Advisor and Consulting Curator for the Sir Percival David Collection; and has been consulted by many international museums.
Her many publications include the catalogue raisonné Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul (1986); Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection (1994–2010); and 1935. The International Exhibition of Chinese Art (2026, as editor and co-author). She acts as academic consultant for Sotheby’s worldwide, and is Editorial Board Member of the Journal of International Ceramic Studies.
