Handling Session of Yaozhou Wares with Professor Brian M. Salzberg

On Saturday 13th of December OCS members gathered at the home of Professor Salzberg in Philadelphia, USA to handle 15 exquisite examples from the Yaozhou kilns in Shaanxi province, China. The pieces ranged from a large Tang black ware ewer and a unique Tang lion-shaped incense burner to two pieces of Yaozhou “moon white” ware, one carved with a lotus flower. Other pieces included rare examples of the Northern Song period and a small Five Dynasties cup. The group also handled a persimmon covered bowl and two unusual zhadous, one a beautifully carved flower-shaped pot and the other a Northern Song (or Jin) black glazed zhadou with a glaze that had turned dark blue in the kiln. The handling was followed by lively discussion and accompanied by food and wine.

This handling session is for OCS members only
