SUMMARY:Illustrating Chinese ceramics in the early twentieth century: The Art of the Chinese Potter and other ventures
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Museum & Art Gallery holds the original ‘colour guides’ for R.L. Hobson and A.L.Hetherington’s 1923 publication The Art of the Chinese Potter. These are stunning hand-coloured photographs which were used to illustrate ceramics from the collections of early members of the Oriental Ceramic Society such as George Eumorfopoulos, H.J.Oppenheim, and Ferdinand Schiller. The talk will consider which ceramics were chosen for illustration and how the burgeoning interest in Chinese ceramics may have affected developments in printing.\nThe refreshments at the lecture are generously sponsored by Woolley & Wallis\n \n\n
